It's all about you

its-all-about-you What sorts of housing are there?

If you have a learning disability, there are 10 sorts of housing in Brighton & Hove that you could choose:

1. Supported housing

Usually, this means living in your own flat, or in your own room in a shared house, with staff to support you.

2. Shared Lives

Shared Lives is when you live with a family in their home, with their support. It used to be called the Adult Placement Scheme.

3. Extra Care
Extra

Care housing is for people aged 55 or older. It offers more care than sheltered housing, but also independence.

4. HOLD Shared Ownership

With this option, you part rent and part buy your own home. It is available through Southdown Housing Association. This option can give you a home for life. See website for more information www.southdownhousing.org.

5. Private sector renting.

You can rent a home from a private landlord. This gives you lots of choice about where you live. But you may not be able to stay for a long time.

6. Private sector leasing

Sometimes the council manages properties that are owned by private landlords. There can be a lot of choice, but it may be expensive.

7. Social housing

If you rent your home from the council or from a housing association, it is called social housing. It may cost less than private renting, and you can stay for a long time if you stick to the tenancy rules. But there is not very much social housing in Brighton & Hove.

8. Residential services

Residential care is for people with high support needs. Staff are there 24 hours a day.

9. Supported accommodation

Some people need less support. People with daily living skills who choose supported accommodation often stay for just a year or two, before moving on.

10. General needs supported accommodation

This housing option is for people with different support needs. Some people with a mild learning disability choose it. It is part of the Integrated Support Pathway. You can look forward to developing skills so you can live in your own place, after a year or two.

The council has made a booklet that tells you more about housing. If you want a booklet, call Access Point on 01273 295 555.
